Blue Dragons Pt. 4

Old dragons are some of the fiercest beings ever to exist. Rivals to the gods, and certainly no match for mortal armies, old blue dragons are world changers.

Binothres, Very Old Blue Dragon, CR 19

Many years back, a group of towns sent their militias to put an end to the dragon from the desert. Binothres caught wind of this attack, and struck first. While the armies were building a fortified encampment to serve as a base of operations in the desert, he flew to their towns and razed them to dust. He then teleported into their base, using his frightful presence to scatter most and ripped the commanders to shreds. Once the men were removed, the fortress became a prime, defensible lair, and Binothres has set himself up as ruler of the surrounding territories. His power drew a pack of gnolls, and they serve as guards, and mercenaries at Binothres discretion.

Binothres continually has mage armor cast. In general he is content to let his gnolls soften up any invading forces, and is not shy about ordering siege weaponry used on approaching envoys he is not expecting. Those who come to treat find him lounging in his main hall, willing to talk. If things look like they will turn to a fight, he makes use of his spells against warriors, or his might against mages. He has no regard for his mercenaries and will not exclude them from his area of effect spells if it would make them less effective. He has no compunctions against flying away if a fight looks to be going poorly.

Breath Weapon SU: as a standard action, once per 1d4 rounds, Binothres can breathe a line of lightning 100ft long dealing 18d8 Electric damage reflex save DC 33

Create/Destroy Water SP: Binothres can use this ability three times per day. It works like the create water spell, except that he can decide to destroy water instead of creating it, which automatically spoils unattended liquids containing water. Magic items (such as potions) and items in a creature’s possession must succeed on a Will save (DC 29) or be ruined. This ability is the equivalent of a 1st-level spell.

Sound Imitation EX: Binothres can mimic any voice or sound he has heard, anytime he likes. Listeners must succeed on a Will save (DC 29) to detect the ruse.

Frightful Presence EX: Binothres can unsettle foes with his mere presence. The ability takes effect automatically whenever he attacks, charges, or flies overhead. Creatures within a radius of 240ft are subject to the effect if they have fewer than 30 hit die. A potentially affected creature that succeeds on a Will save (DC 31) remains immune to Binothres‘ frightful presence for 24 hours. On a failure, creatures with 4 or less HD become panicked for 4d6 rounds and those with 5 or more HD become shaken for 4d6 rounds.

Nefer-ra, Ancient Blue Dragon CR 21

Long ago, the Hunra Wastes were ruled by a kind and benevolent king, devoted to ensuring safe passage through the brutal terrain for caravans and travelers. His people prospered as they acted as hosts to merchants hoping to make the passage easier. That was over 600 years ago. Now, the wastes are ruled by the Dragon Nefer-ra. Nefer-ra came to the king in friendship offering protection for his people. Shortly after gaining his trust, she slew the king, and took his castle for her own. Now his palace is avoided by all but the most foolhardy adventurers.

Nefer-ra continually has mage armor cast. She keeps a series of alarms cast about the major focus points of the city that trigger with banshee wails when triggered. Nefer-ra uses her massive listen check to detect this screeching and is generally aware of anyone in the city who doesn’t teleport immediately to her location. Once detected, she uses veil to appear as a lost traveler, desperate, starving, and raving about ghostly wraiths. The ruse is that the city is haunted, and she needs their help. She attempts to endear herself to the party for protection, claiming to be able to warn of traps, and using dominate person as needed. Once she has assessed the skills of the intruders, she will do one of two things. 1 – Simply eat them. 2 – cast the following buffs in secret, and then attack. Globe of Invulnerability, True Seeing, Invisibility Greater, Mirror Image, and Resist Energy.
