Red Dragons Pt. 1

Here we are. The long awaited Red Dragons. I debated saving them for the end, but ultimately decided to keep with alphabetical order. That’s how big a deal red dragons are. For a lot of people, they are The Dragons. They live in volcanoes, the breath fire, the look like Smaug. Its the iconic for a reason. Red dragons are cool. Red dragons live in mountains, are “the most covetous of all dragons”, live in caves on mountains, and ooze confidence. I tend to have them lean into Germanic culture, as that’s where a lot of classic dragons of literature come from, and their as written bio doesn’t really say a lot, outside of “iconic dragons”.

Lets get into the big bad red dragons.

Wyrmling, Hönigsdrakk , CR 4

While the Hönigsdrakk is a wyrmling, it is still a fierce red dragon. When she found a noble and his hunting party exploring the mountain on which she hatched, an attack was inevitable. She ambushed, and slew the party before collecting their belongings to serve as the foundation to her horde.

Hönigsdrakk attacks in a straight forward manner. If her foes have no obvious ranged weapons, she strafes them with her breath weapon, enough to kill most weaker foes after a blast or two. If they have bows or ranged weaponry, she confronts them directly with a Bluff check to convince them she means no threat. Then, when in close, she unleashes a breath weapon, before maneuvering to focus full attacks on any casters or archers.

Breath Weapon SU: as a standard action, once per 1d4 rounds, Hönigsdrakk can breathe a cone of fire 30ft long dealing 2d10 fire damage reflex save DC 18.

Lair

The Hönigsdrakk’s lair is the cave in which she was born. Her eggshells, and those of her smashed, unhatched, siblings are still strewn about. The perk of being born first she would say.

Rikka is large sized, and will use it to her advantage. She tends to spend her time aggressively patrolling her mountain, and will begin combat with anyone she sees encroaching. She hasn’t yet decided on the value of tribute, vs just murder and theft, and attacks without warning. Combats tend to start with her flying from a distance, and opening with a breath weapon before engaging in melee. She knows she should flee if combat goes poorly for her, but it hasn’t happened yet, and she will not start trying until it is too late.

Breath Weapon SU: as a standard action, once per 1d4 rounds, Riikka can breathe a cone of fire 40ft long dealing 4d10 fire damage reflex save DC 21.

Lair

Carlesak Peak, is the hunting grounds of Rikka, the large red dragon. That is usually enough to drive off most travelers, but it also has piqued the interest of a few adventurers. Riikka lairs in a natural stone cave near the peak, but can be found patrolling the mountain most days.
